Vegetable Stew

Wait, she’s saying something. EXCUSE ME??

You a-talkin’ to me? You a-talkin’ to me? What?

Why me? Why not a green or yellow pepper instead? Red’s just another colour, really. Fancy some nice tomatoes? How about a nice courgette? You see that big purple thug behind me? That’s an aubergine. Don’t mess with him, I warn you. He’s on my side.

No, I’ve just heard the dreaded word! Put us all down! PUT US DOWN!!

Please... not ratatouille...

Sweet Dreams

At first it sounded like the wind was tapping branches on the living-room window; but the noise persisted and, curious, I drew back one of the curtains.

Pressed hard against the glass, a white two-dimension figure silently screamed Munch-like at us. It was trying to get in, but the window was sealed. Pulling back other curtains revealed white ‘screamers’ everywhere, trying to enter through non-existent gaps – for now we were all safe.

Then we heard a scream from upstairs. A fanlight was ajar in the bathroom. We rushed to the kids’ bedroom.

What we saw there made our blood freeze.

Pride And Prejudice On The No36 Bus

This story is dedicated to Rhian Hughes, who provided the inspiration.

On the lower deck of the bus, Roseanne sat reading Pride And Prejudice.

Across the isle, three women discussed fridge contents – fruit, chicken needing to be used, some broccoli.

Behind Roseanne, two men discussed fingernail-clipping and shaving techniques. However, their switch of topics to deodorants was just too much for her.

“Shut the **** up! I’m trying to read!”

As instructed, everyone was immediately silent; fourteen faces turned towards Roseanne unblinkingly. Then the whispering started.

“Who does she think she is?”

“I’ve got a Kindle.”

“I’ve read 50 Shades.”

“What’s reading?”

Roseanne sighed, shut her book, then closed her eyes.

50 Shades

Suddenly, she broke away from their embrace, lowering her eyes.

“I need you to do it,” she whispered. “Now.”

“Are you sure?” he asked, tilting her face back up to make her look at him. “It’ll hurt.”

“There’s no other way, Christian.”

He breathed deeply. “Turn around, Anastasia, remove your top.” She did as instructed: she was bra-less. He touched her soft skin.

“Do it, Christian. Now.”

He acted, she winced, said nothing at first, then simply, ‘Thank you’.

“I know your back itches,” he said, “but do we need the theatre?”

“It’s more fun this way,” she smiled, mischievously.

    Flash Fiction

Flash fiction is very, very short fiction indeed - short stories of any sort of length from a Haiku to ten minutes' reading. Good for when you're in a hurry. This series is a selection of contributions to Friday Flash Fiction, where there's a limit of 100 words. I try to make all mine exactly 100 words.
